昨秋、SMP GALLERYで開催したマリーヌ・ワグナーさんとの初個展「 Collector's Room」では、現代日本作家の版画と古美術、民芸品をマリーヌさんがスタイリングして展示。照度を落としたギャラリーは彼女の部屋に招かれたような寛ぎのアート空間でした。
2回目はPOP UPイベントで、マリーヌさんのプライベートコレクションから、戦後のスカンジナビアで生まれた小さな陶器と、現代日本の版画作品を展示します。異なる時代と文化を背景に美意識の交差から生まれる、静かな物語をお楽しみください。

企画展概要について： マリーヌ・ワグナー
デンマークから届けられた二つのコレクションは、江戸後期（さらにそれ以前）から続く、日本と西洋の芸術交流の波を物語ると同時に、陶芸と版画という二つの異なる芸術表現に光を当てています。
一方は土、もう一方は紙。異なる素材を用いながらも、どちらも戦後の日本とスカンジナビアに共通して見られた、洗練された高い工芸技術の質を明確に示しています。
20世紀半ば、デンマークとスウェーデンでは、それぞれに実用陶器の伝統がある中で、アジアの陶芸にインスピレーションを求める陶芸家たちが登場しました。
Royal CopenhagenやRörstrandといった著名な工房で、また自身のスタジオで制作した彼らは、スカンジナビアの伝統と、日本の美意識を融合した器を生み出しました。
そこには、濱田庄司やバーナード・リーチが牽引した民藝運動の美意識も大きな影響を与えています。彼らの思想は大陸を越えて広がり、スカンジナビアの陶芸家たちにも深い影響を及ぼしました。
一方、版画の世界では、日本の伝統的な版画「浮世絵」が19世紀後半以降、西洋の美術やデザインに大きな影響を与えたことを、日本の作家たち自身も目の当たりにしていました。
そして彼らは、「異国的」とされたスタイルや技法、表現を取り入れながらも、それぞれの方法で日本の文化的背景とのつながりを保ちました。
そうして日本の版画家たちは、東洋と西洋の文化・芸術をつなぐ交流の一端を担い、そのつながりは今日まで続いています。

Malene Wagner
デンマーク出身の美術史家。日本美術と日本の美意識を専門とし、19世紀から21世紀における日本と西洋の文化交流について研究しています。
幼少期に訪れたアジアへの旅に強く影響を受け、少女時代からコレクションを続けています。
昨年11月には、ヨーロッパではいまだ十分に評価されていない現代日本版画に光を当てた著書『Modern Japanese Printmakers: New Waves and Eruptions』
をPrestel（UK）より刊行しました。
The statement by Malene Wagner
The two collections coming from Denmark represent the continuing waves of artistic exchange between Japan and the West since the late Edo period (and even earlier), while they give us insight into two specific art forms: ceramic art and printmaking. One of clay, the other of paper, both media are a clear testament to the high quality of refined craftsmanship found parallel in Japan and Scandinavia in the post-war period.
In the mid-20th century, Denmark and Sweden – with their own tradition of utilitarian pottery – saw the rise of ceramicists looking to Asian pottery for inspiration. Working for renowned workshops like Royal Copenhagen and Rörstrand, as well as their own studios, these artists created vessels fusing Scandinavian traditions with Japanese aesthetics as those promoted by the Mingei Movement led by Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach who had a profound influence across continents.
Within the print genre, Japanese artists witnessed how the impact of their country’s traditional prints, ukiyo-e, from the second half of the 19th century had shaped areas of Western art and design significantly, and now they adopted the ‘exotic’ styles, techniques and expressions while remaining connected to their Japanese heritage in one way or the other – thereby contributing to the cultural and artistic connection between the East and the West, which continues to this day.
Malene Wagner is a Danish Art Historian specialising in Japanese art and aesthetics as well as the cultural exchanges between Japan and the Western world in the 19th-21st centuries.
She has collected since she was a young girl, strongly influenced by visits to Asia in her early childhood. In November last year, her book “Modern Japanese Printmakers: New Waves and Eruptions” was published with Prestel (UK) shedding light on a genre still greatly undervalued in Europe.
