— The Beauty of Earth, and the Future of Works Returning to Earth —

We are pleased to present a solo exhibition by ceramic artist Takahiro Yahagi.
Based in his hometown of Murayama, Yamagata, Yahagi creates works in porcelain, expressing the changing seasons, light and shadow through form, texture, and color.
“Recently, rather than using refined clay, I have been making my own clay from earth in its powdered form, and shaping works from it.
By turning powder into clay, I can encounter characteristics of the earth that I would not discover in my usual practice.
For me, this process feels like a deeper connection with earth as a material.
Shaping it, transforming the material, and eventually returning it to earth.
As I observe the ever-changing expressions of the earth, I hope to convey its beauty and fascination through my work.”
- Takahiro Yahagi / Ceramicist

About the Artist

Born in Yamagata, Japan, in 1986, Takahiro Yahagi first became interested in ceramics during his high school years through hands-on experiences with clay in class and at local pottery studios.

He entered Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2005, where he studied ceramics, and completed his graduate studies in 2011.

In December 2014, he established his studio, 245 STUDIO, where he primarily creates and presents porcelain vessels for everyday use, including tableware and flower vessels.

In recent years, his practice has expanded beyond wheel-thrown forms. Exploring porcelain clay through hand-building and a variety of techniques, he creates works that extend from functional vessels into sculptural and art-object forms.
